5 Tips for Moving
Planning, Packing, and Everything Else I've Learned From Moving
Sponsored by Moving Solutions
Remember in college moving from dorm to dorm and from apartment to apartment? Still to this day I have no idea how I fit my entire life into my little Saturn and traveled around Knoxville. What I can tell you are the things that I have learned from my many moves and also things I would never do again. Check out my 5 tips for moving and save for your next move!
Tip #1: Don't buy your boxes
So many people just head to UPS or FedEx and buy boxes for their move and that can get so expensive! There are so many places you can find free boxes that this should not be where you spend your money. Some of my favorite places to check are local liquor stores and even grocery stores. All you have to do is ask! I also have been known to grab boxes from work when we get deliveries. You can also post on your local neighborhood Facebook page or NextDoor. Most of the time, people will put their empty boxes on the doorstep for you to swing by and grab. Don't forget to pay it forward and do the same for your neighbor!
Tip #2: Don't take your clothes off the hangers
I cannot take 100% credit for this tip but it is GENIUS. In the past, I have bought the boxes with the hanging rods, but those were so expensive. I have also taken the route of removing all of the hangers and folding every piece in a regular box. However, the way to go is to take groups of your clothes off the rack, leave the hangers on, and place a trash bag over the clothes. Turn the trash bag upside down and poke a hole in the top. Shimmy your hangers through the hole then tie the bottom of the bag. It makes transport easy and your clothes are ready to hang up right away!
Tip #3: Label every single box
Whether you decide to hire movers or bribe your friends with pizza, label everything. There is nothing worse than getting to the new house and having no idea what room the boxes should go in. Group your rooms together, label the box, and then make sure when the boxes are carried in they are also delivered to the correct room. If you are really feeling fancy, color code or generate labels for the boxes so anyone can help with the organization.
Tip #4: Take care of cleaning and repairs before you move in
If I had a dollar for every time I said "I wish we would have done that when we bought the house" I could have bought a whole other house! While it seems like you are already spending a lot of money when you move into a new space if there is something you are thinking about doing, changing, or adding, do it now. Chances are if you wait, it won't get done. I also recommend paying for someone to come in and deep clean prior to moving. It can be exciting when you sign the papers and want to get into the space immediately, but a deep clean is probably not only needed but worth it!
Tip #5: Hire help. Professional help.
Using friends and family is acceptable when you are in college or moving into your first place, but after that, you need to invest in professional movers. It is one of the most worthwhile added expenses and I would recommend it to anyone I knew who was moving. Companies like Moving Solutions will come to your home, assist with long distance moving in the Nashville area, and move everything without you even having to lift a finger. Save the pizza and drinks for yourself after the move and hire professional movers!
The process of moving can seem scary and expensive, especially in today's market, but there are definitely ways to help cut costs. Use these tips as a guide and decide what you want to spend money on and what you want to try and do yourself. Ultimately, the best tip I can give you is to try not to stress and go with the flow. Something will for sure go wrong or not go as planned, but you've got this!
